Space

Often it is the use of space that makes a landscape stand out in our mind even if we are not aware that it is the juxtaposition between activity and serenity that satisfies us. This is true in the obvious sense like a pathway running through dense planting but also applies within plantings between plants that demand attention because they are in full bloom or because their stature or form is dominant. And between plants whose job is to play second fiddle and tie the design in, preventing it becoming a sensory overload.
